A world of talent
Globally connected
Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland, is a globally networked institution with a strong commitment to serving and partnering with our local, national, regional and global communities. This external engagement is supported by a range of professional service units that work in tandem with the University’s Faculties, Institutes and Centres to maximise the reach and impact of the University’s teaching and research activities. Oversight for these endeavours is provided by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Strategic Engagement.
The University of Auckland Innovation Institute China (pictured left) provides unprecedented access to an extensive range of networks, research and funding opportunities in China. The University’s knowledge transfer company, UniServices, has established the institute in the Chinese city of Hangzhou.
International Reach
A strong international focus has been a core University characteristic since its foundation. Our international outlook underpins our aspiration to be a leading civic university of global standing. We maintain consistent and intensive engagement with a number of global university networks, most notably the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), Universitas 21 (U21) and Worldwide Universities Network (WUN).
The University attracts a diverse and dynamic international student body from 104 countries. Approximately 16% of the total student body is international.
The University seeks to provide all its students with an international experience, be this on-campus or through an overseas learning opportunity. Pre-pandemic, one in four undergraduate students had an overseas experience through a combination of student exchange programmes, language tours, clinical placements, internships, volunteering and short-term overseas learning opportunities, and a range of “internationalisation at home” initiatives were also available. There is a particular emphasis on developing opportunities which attract Māori and Pacific Island participants. These internationalisation opportunities are being widely re-introduced post-pandemic.
Through our Net Zero Carbon Strategy, we are actively exploring approaches to minimise the carbon emissions attributable to internationalisation, while retaining and enhancing the significant benefits that our students receive through international experiences.
Alumni Relations and Development - Donors, Alumni and Friends
ARD managed the University’s campaign “For All Our Futures”, successfully overshooting its dual goals of 50% alumni engagement (60.4% achieved) and $300m fundraising ($380m achieved). This was the most successful philanthropic campaign in New Zealand’s history.
Marketing and Recruitment - Taking our University to the World
The Schools and Community Engagement team are focused on developing the University’s school leaver pipeline into our undergraduate degrees, managing the University’s relationship with New Zealand’s secondary schools – and promoting tertiary study and all its possibilities – to potential future students, their families and wider communities from Year 9 through to Year 13. The team work with schools and communities to deliver a wide range of welcoming online, in-person (on- and off-campus) events, presentations and activities to raise awareness of the University’s programmes, entry requirements, extra/co-curricular activities and facilities, and to help support school leavers’ decision-making and successful preparation for and transition to tertiary study.
Communications and Engagement - Talking to the world
The team engages and builds relationships with internal and external audiences by developing key content and messaging across all relevant touchpoints and assets (including University websites, intranet, social media, media engagements, publications and events), while ensuring that all staff, students and alumni are kept informed about University activities in a timely and appropriate manner.
Communications staff also provide strategic communications advice and support to the University’s senior leaders on matters that have a reputational risk for the University in order to help build and protect the reputation of the institution or provide guidance, direction and reassurance to staff, students and other stakeholders in moments of major disruption (such as during the recent COVID response and/or major weather events).
The Communications team also offer training for academic staff to help build their own individual profile, as well as the reputation of the University, through their engagement with the media.
Domestic Engagement - Country-wide Connections
The University leads the government-funded North Asia Centre of Asia Pacific Excellence (CAPE), one of three CAPEs nationwide, which promotes cultural and language understanding in schools and the business community. We also host a Confucius Institute, which promotes the learning of Mandarin in the broader Auckland community.
